Composite or
timber?

Choose by the look you want, how much care you can give it, how you will use the gate and whether your ground can support the fence.

Material choice should follow the job

Quick comparison

Choose the material
around real life.

Neither material suits every garden. Compare the look, care, repair options and whether your garden can support each fence before choosing.

Appearance and care

Composite gives a clean, consistent look and usually needs less painting. Timber has a natural look and still needs care.

Repair and matching

Timber can be easier to adapt or replace section by section. Composite repairs depend on whether boards in the same colour and shape are still available.

Posts, gates and ground

The visible boards are only part of the decision. Posts, gate support, drainage, levels and access affect both fence types and belong in the written quote.

Composite gives a clean, consistent look and usually needs less painting. Timber has a natural look and a wide choice, from solid privacy fences to open picket, trellis and slatted styles. Neither suits every garden.

Do not forget the posts

The boards are only part of a fence. Composite may need its own posts and rails. Timber can use timber or concrete posts, with a base board at ground level. Check post depth, drainage and gate support before choosing.

What care do they need?

Even composite fences need an occasional check and clean. Check composite for loose parts, movement, dirt and damage. Clean timber when needed and use any treatment recommended by the manufacturer. Check gate hinges, latches and the space around the gate. Gates move, so they may need attention sooner than a fence panel.

What about repairs?

Timber can be easier to match or replace one section at a time. Composite can also be repaired, but finding boards with the same colour and shape can be difficult if the product is no longer sold. Ask whether you could replace one section in five years, not just how the fence looks on day one.

Simple rule: choose a fence you will be happy to live with and care for. The boards are only part of the job; posts, gates and the ground beneath them matter too.
